Named by Oprah’s Magazine as one the “Top Food Festival worth the Trip”, the Taste of Atlanta is Atlanta’s Premier Outdoor Food Festival. The festival takes place in October at Technology Square in Midtown.

The Taste of Atlanta is an outdoor event that takes place over two days. The festival showcases the diversity of Atlanta’s food scene that attracts food lovers to Atlanta. This flavor filled festival is now in its 8th year and more than 80 restaurants come to promote Atlanta’s favorite foods. Some of the featured restaurants will be 4th & Swift, 5th Street Rib’s n Blues, Atlanta Cheesecake Café, Bhojanic, Buckhead Diner, Cellar 56 and Dolce just to name a few.

Some national and local celebrity Chefs comes to share their culinary talents. Hosting the Cooking Stage will be radio personalities Chef and The Fatman. Some of the Chefs participating will be Top Chef Finalist, Carla Hall and Next Food Network Star, Jamika Pessoa. Carla will dazzle you with her Cuban Tenderloin while Jamika plans on winning you over with her Mojito Steak Salad and Apple Dumplings with a Carmel Apple Martini Sauce.

Wine and Beer tasting tents will allow you to sample some of the tastes of Atlanta. A Silent Auction will be held and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Share our Strength’s Operation Frontline. This organization is a cooking-based program that provides a strong foundation for educating adults and kids on nutrition and cooking. Intriguing items and exciting travel and entertainment packages up for auction is sure to make the auction a success.

No trip to Nashville would be complete without taking the time to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. Even if you’re not the biggest country music fan, a tour of the city would be incomplete without a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Country music’s rich history is perfectly preserved in a state-of-the-art thirty seven million dollar structure that spans an entire block of downtown Nashville. Operated by the Country Music Foundation, a non-profit, its mission is to preserve the history and traditions of country music for future generations to enjoy. In 1961, the CMA created the Country Music Hall of Fame. Their first inductees were Jimmie Rodgers, Fred Rose and Hank Williams.

The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum takes you on a trip through decades of country music history. The original Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened up on Music Row in April 1967. Now, with a new state-of-the-art building and location, just the building alone is reason enough to visit. The new building’s exterior is laced with symbolic images of Amanda Price. The most obvious of these are the windows that mirror the configuration of piano keys. More conspicuous images include the diamond-shaped radio mast, which is a miniaturized replica of the WSM tower located a few miles south of Nashville. The round discs surrounding the tower symbolize the different size records and CDs country music has been recorded upon. When viewed from the air the building is in the shape of a bass clef. The north-west corner of the building juts out like the tail fin of a 50’s Cadillac. The Country Music Hall of Fame was designed by local architecture firm Tuck Hinton Architects and museum design firm Ralph Appelbaum Associate.

The permanent exhibit traces the history of country music from its humble beginnings and incorporates memorabilia, interactive displays and audio and video clips to take you through the generations. Some of the many treasures that will be forever imbedded in our culture is Elvis Presley’s 1961 gold-plated Cadillac, Willie Nelson’s bandana and Minnie Pearls’ hat just to name a few. The exhibits will thrill your senses with sight and sounds and are sure to thrill any fan. Gold and platinum records line the walls of the museum. You will find exhibits dedicated to those who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame throughout the 40,000-square-foot museum. Live shows are hosted on the grounds at the famous Ford Theater.

When visiting Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, plan on spending several hours so that you can enjoy all amenities that the museum has to offer. Listen in on live satellite radio broadcast and on your way out, walk through the 5,500 square foot gift shop to find a special keepsake. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also houses a full-service restaurant, SoBro Grill & Catering sure to satisfy your appetite while visiting.

Owning any home comes with certain responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is the upkeep of the home according to the standards of the community in which it sits. IN every neighborhood there’s always one house with a bad lawn. The front yard has bare spots that turn to mud whenever it rains. Whatever grass there is is brown and full of weeds. If the lawn is full and lush, then the owner doesn’t mow it until it gets to be a foot high. The owner of this home is the second most disliked guy in the neighborhood.

The first, of course, is the guy with the best lawn. This homeowner is constantly giving advice to everyone else in the neighborhood. He tells them which weed control product to use and talks about his own special blends of grass seed varieties, with a special mixture for the front yard, where it’s sunny, and another for the back yard which gets shade most of the day. His lawn is perfect and, for that, he is despised.

The one neighborhood where nobody is hated because of their lawn is the golf course neighborhood. Golf course homes are those located wither within the grounds of a golf course or adjacent to one. Here, there is no question about which resident has the inside scoop about how to take care of grass. Obviously, it’s the head groundskeeper of the course. After all, it’s his job to know how to make a perfect field of grass. He knows which variety to use for every application. He knows the best fertilizers, the right watering regimen, the right way to aerate, how often to mow, and every other aspect of lawn care that there is. Furthermore, instead of trying to get away when he gives advice, the residents are hanging on his every word, trying to coax him into sharing his lawn care wisdom and secrets.

On the other side of the coin, no one who lives in a golf course home ever lets their lawn go. The shame of having an unkempt lawn, or bare patches of dirt in the yard is too great when your house is next to the beautifully manicured greens and fairways of a golf course. Even those with a history of poor lawns can’t help but make the efforts required to keep their yards presentable. In the unlikely event that someone in a golf course community does neglect their social responsibility, it only takes one community intervention session, or one neighbor to sneak into his yard with a lawnmower at midnight before he straightens out and flies right.

If you want to live in a community where everyone understands the meaning of the term civic responsibility as it relates to lawn care, then you should buy a golf course home.

Hiking through the wilderness can be great way to enjoy nature, but riding the trails by horseback adds another dimension of enjoyment to the adventure. Being a native New Englander, I have ridden through the open fields and wooded hills of that area on numerous occasions, but perhaps my favorite trail ride was one trip I made out to the desert southwest.

First of all, the trip was made during the month of January, so escaping the freezing temperatures and snow of the Northeast was a very big bonus. In January, being able to ride in your shirtsleeves without coming within inches of freezing to death is well worth the trip out west all by itself. January is still winter there though so the temperatures are moderate, the afternoon temperature were in the high sixties. For some that’s sweater weather, for New Englanders that’s downright balmy.

We chose a local ranch that offered guided tours through the desert hills. We had never been to th4e desert before so e didn’t know what to expect. The stereotypical view of the desert as a wasteland of burning sand may be true for Saudi Arabia, but it isn’t true for hills around Scottsdale, Arizona. Still classified as desert, the area is actually full of life. Joshua trees and cactus line the trails and our guides pointed out small holes in the ground that were home to many of the desert’s small animals. In January, they tend to stay in their burrows, waiting for the warmer weather, so we didn’t see anything scurrying around. We did see birds, and at one point, squinting into the sun, we saw what our guide told us was a wild goat looking down at us from high on a distant hill.

We rode through areas that although they are called canyons, were more like valleys between to rocky hills. The trails sloped gently, and like most trail rides, the horses knew the way and didn’t require much effort from their riders. Trail rides are the perfect way for non-riders to get a taste of horseback riding without the need for extensive lessons. In five minutes the trail guides can tell you everything you need to know for a safe and fun ride.

The terrain, scenery, and overall experience of riding through the desert canyons of Arizona were all entirely new to us and quite different from anyplace we could ride in New England. By the end of the ride, we had added Scottsdale, and the Cave Creek community in particular to our list of potential retirement communities when we reach that point. The people who live there are blessed with beautiful weather all year round. They are close enough to the activity of a thriving city, but far enough away to consider themselves country folk. The area truly offers the best of both worlds, and for the equestrian, it is truly one of the nation’s best areas for riding.

Choosing a home in a new city or a different part of the country can be a very difficult task. You may know very little about the new location and nothing at all about the different communities within it. You may have limited time to visit and look for new homes before you actually move there. The whole endeavor is full of unknowns that add up to increased risk. A better option is to find temporary lodging in the new location while you scope it out and make an informed decision.

One way to get to know a new area before you choose your permanent home is to live there. Instead of jumping right in, consider taking a temporary housing option for a few months while you get to know the neighborhoods and take time to look at all the houses that are on the market. There are a number of different temporary accommodations that you might consider.

If you haven’t yet sold your old home, then you don’t need to move your furniture an extra time. Instead think about staying at a hotel, a furnished apartment, or in a corporate housing unit. Each has different advantages and disadvantages. A hotel, of course, is small and generally means you need to take all your meals at restaurants unless you want to pay through the nose for room service. On the other hand, you can stay there for very short periods of time without a lease to tie you down. You can even fly back to visit your family on weekends without having to pay for the hotel room while you’re not there.

A furnished apartment is a nice option, if you can find one. You have all the conveniences of a more permanent home, like a working kitchen, and a bit more room that a hotel. The downside is that most landlords will want you to not only sing a long term lease, usually for 12 months, but they will also want first and last month’s rent along with a security deposit. You may also need to make your own arrangements to have the utilities turned on or switched over to your name. The availability of furnished apartments may also be limited and you may have to choose a less desirable neighborhood for this choice.

Another option is Corporate Housing. Corporate housing is much like a furnished apartment with a few improvements. First, it is generally available on a short term basis with no lease. Usually, a minimum stay of 30 days is all that’s required. Second, corporate housing is designed to house relocating employees or guests of large businesses that operate in the area. As such, it is usually located conveniently to the business district in a good neighborhood. Third, it comes fully furnished right down to kitchen utensils and bed sheets.

Living in the new town for a few weeks without making a permanent commitment allows you the luxury of making sure that don’t rush into a home purchase that you’ll regret later.
