When you go out in public, you want your overall appearance, clothes, and your accessories to say something about who you are. To repeat an overused fashion expression, you want to make a statement. Some people don’t care about making a statement, but whether they are scripting their appearance or not, it is still speaking volumes about them.

One of the accessories that speaks loudest about us is the purse or handbag. Other than a few outlandish hats that you might see around town, the handbag is generally the largest accessory that we carry. Its size makes it the most visible as well. All too often, the words that the handbag adds to our statement are very unflattering adjectives.

A vinyl handbag usually shouts “cheap!” or “Tacky!” and occasionally “Look away, fashion disaster in progress!” Whether you care about your appearance or not, you probably don’t want those things said about you either by your own accessories, or by the people who see them and then talk behind your back. And they will talk.

A cloth handbag with a print of any sort will say something else. Depending upon the print it may say “arts and crafts project” or “follower of fads.” The trouble with prints is that they really tend to be out of date very quickly, this may be a season of floral design, but in two months everyone is going with jungle prints, then animal prints, and then perhaps abstract print designs will be all the rage. Your other choice in cloth handbags is to go with a solid color, and that’s fine as long as every single one of your outfits matches that color. Of course, then you risk being known as “The lady who always wears yellow” or whatever color the handbag happens to be.

The third and usually the best choice is a leather handbag. While various colors are available, the classic rich, textured earth tones of leather make a good match with a wide variety of clothing colors and styles. Leather handbags can go to work in the morning, to dinner, and then even out to a club in the evening and look like they belong in all three places. Leather is one those classic looks that never goes out of style so you don’t have to worry about being out of date. Leather talks about you too, but its deep mysterious voice whispers words like “high class,” “elegant,” “expensive,” and “confident.”

Choosing an outfit and the accessories that go with it, is like writing the caption under the memory of the evening that your friends, acquaintances, and even strangers will read beneath your picture. You write it with your attitude, your clothes, and your accessories. Choose your adjectives carefully, after all, they are defining you to everyone who sees you.
