Waxing

If you’re thinking about a wax, you might wonder about the difference a Brazilian Wax can offer you. Initially introduced in the late 1980s by seven Brazilian sisters, the real difference here is that most clients who opt for this method of hair removal want everything removed. With a bikini wax, most women only opt to have any visible hair removed. While a French bikini wax takes things one step further, a Brazilian wax goes all the way so that you are completely hairless. Whether you want to look great in a thong bikini or you just like the hairless style, this can be a great choice.

What to Expect
When you make an appointment to have a Brazilian wax, expect to be in the salon for a half-hour to forty-five minutes depending on whether or not you’ve ever had this type of wax done before. In most cases, you’ll be in a private room, and you’ll be asked to remove your pants and lie on a waxing table. Usually you’ll be provided with a paper thong for the procedure. The wax only need about ¼ inch of hair to grab, so your attendant may trim a bit before applying powder to the area. If your hair isn’t long enough, you’ll have to make another appointment. Powder will be applied to keep the wax from sticking to your skin, then your attendant will begin spreading the warm wax over your skin and hair. While it’s still warm, she or he will put a cloth strip over the wax and press firmly. Once the wax is cool, the strip will be pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth so the root will be taken out as well. Most attendants are fairly fast, which means less discomfort, but you can ask for a hard wax. In this situation, the wax is thicker, and it isn’t peeled off until it’s cool. It can be slightly less painful.

If, at some point during the procedure, it’s too painful, you can ask that smaller strips be applied. Your attendant will start in the front and work her way to the back. She or he may ask that you hold the skin to keep it tight. Don’t forget that a Brazilian means removing all of the hair, so don’t be surprised as she or he works his way back.

Once complete, any stray hairs will be tweezed, and if hair remains at your request, you can ask for patterned designs or even dye what’s left of the hair. Your attendant will put some lotion over any areas that have been waxed, and it’s in your best interest to apply aloe lotion or a cream that contains hydrocortisone if any bumps or ingrown hairs occur.

Because you’re working with a fairly sensitive area of the body, it’s only natural to expect some pain. What’s more, though, is that you can get an infection if this isn’t handled properly, and some states have regulations that prohibit this procedure, so check with your salon before you make an appointment.
