THE PILOT WAS PART OF A HEAVY SCOUT SECTION WITH ANOTHER OH-6A AND TWO AH-1GS INVOLVED IN A VISUAL RECON OF A PORTION OF THE U MINH FOREST. THE TEAM WAS OUT ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 30 MIN. WHEN THE PILOT OF 67-16635, WHO WAS PULLING OUT OF A GUN RUN, HEARD A LOUD BANG FOLLOWED BY A PARTIAL LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR CONTROL AND A SEVERE HIGH FREQUENCY VIBRATION. THE PILOT TRIED TO APPLY RIGHT PEDAL AND A COMPLETE LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR GHRUST WAS EXPERIENCED. THE WING MAN ADVISED THE PILOT THAT HIS TAIL ROTOR HAD STOPPED. THE PILOT, ON UHF, INFORMED THE FLIGHT OF HIS INTENTIONS, REQUESTED COVER TO AN AIR FIELD FOR LANDING. THE PILOT WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE AH-1GS DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH FUEL TO FLY TO SOC TRANG. THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND AT CA MAU. HE WAS UNABLE TO CLIMB ABOVE 300 FEET AGL AND WANTED TO KEEP THE GUN COVER. HE MADE HIS APPROACH TO A RUNNING LANDING TO THE SITE OF THE PSP RUNWAY IN A GRASSY AREA. THE APPROACH TO THE LANDING WAS WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE PILOT REDUCED THROTTLE TO CONTROL THE YAW. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT HAD PROGRESSED TO THE 90 DEGREE POINT HE THEN REDUCED THROTTLE AND BROUGHT THE AIRCRAFT AROUND TO THE ZERO YAW AND TOUCHED DOWN AND STARTED TO SLIDE. HIS AIRSPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 30 KNOTS. THE WIND WAS 13 KNOTS GUSTING TO 18. THE PILOT MAINTAINED CONTROL UNTIL THE LEFT SKID HIT A LARGE PILE OF ROCKS HIDDEN IN THE GRASS. THE LEFT SKID THEN SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT DROPPED OVER ON ITS SIDE COMING TO REST WITH THE MINIGUN DUG INTO THE DIRT. THE PILOT, AFTER STRIKING THE ROCKS, PULLED OFF ALL REMAINING PITCH. THE PILOT THEN SHUT DOWN ALL SWITCHES AND ENGINE AND EXITED THE AIRCRAFT.\\
