War Story:
I was wondering if you have any way to get some information on a piece of
action that occurred on 30 August 1969 near Phan Thiet. The Unit was D 2/1
Cav, which, if I remember correctly was under 1st Field Force at the time.
One of our LOH helicopters was shot down and the Pilot Lt. Eddie Wittkamper
was severely wounded. My crew and I picked him up in a McQuire rig and he
survived. I finally located him recently and there are some differences in
our memories. Much of what he related was told to him by the Troop
commander when he returned to the states. Eddie's gunner that day was a man
by the name of Cook and was either a PFC or Sp/4. The images of my crew are
still in my mind but I cannot remember their names. I think my co pilot's
name was Mike but I just cannot remember for sure and cannot remember my
crewchief and gunners name. I know that John Butcho and Rich Matticola,
both Warrants, were flying one Cobra but I can't remember the other crew. I
am writing a short story about that day and would like to give credit to
everyone involved as they all did one hell of a job.
I heard someone on Helivets say that if their were no pictures then it
didn't happen. I am enclosing some pictures. One (B&W)was taken by Rich
Matticola from the front seat of his Cobra as I was picking Eddie up in the
rig. The other OH-6 is to the left of the "O" in OH-6 and was checking out
some NVA that the Cobra's killed while I was shooting my approach. I
believe that it was flown by a Warrant Officer named Click. I couldn't see
any serial numbers of the OH-6 that Eddie was flying.
