Accident Summary:
^CPT HARP^ WAS SCHEDULED FOR A STANDARDIZATION/ORIENTATION FLIGHT WITH ^CW2 WILSON^, AS IP. THE FLIGHT WAS SCHEDULED FOR THE MORNING OF 4 FEB 72. ^CW2 WILSON^ AND ^CPT HARP^ COMMENCED A PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION, FINDING NO GROUNDING DISCREPANCIES, THE PILOT, IN THE RIGHT SEAT, AND IP, IN THE LEFT SEAT, DEPARTED LZ 402 AT 0930 HOURS. THE AIRCRAFT WAS CARRYING NO CARGO AND WAS WITHIN WEIGHT LIMITATIONS. ^CW2 WILSON^ CONDUCTED AN AREA ORIENTATION INCLUDING THE BRIGADE COMPOUND AND LANDING ZONES MAUDE AND LINDA. THE FLIGHT PROCEEDED TO COORDINATES BT744044 WHERE NORMAL APPROACHES, HOVERING AUTOROTATIONS, ANTI-TORQUE AT A HOVER MANEUVERS WERE DEMONSTRATED AND PERFORMED. ^CW2 WILSON^ THEN DEMONSTRATED TWO TOUCHDOWN AUTOROTATIONS AND ALLOWED ^CPT HARP^ TO PERFORM A THIRD. ^CW2 WILSON^ DETERMINED IT NECESSARY TO RECOVER THE AIRCRAFT FROM ^CPT HARP^ BECAUSE OF IMPROPER INITIAL PITCH PULL. ^CW2 WILSON^ EXPLAINED THE MISTAKE TO ^CPT HARP^ AND PERMITTED HIM TO PERFORM ANOTHER AUTOROTATION. THE MANEUVER WAS ESTABLISHED DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND, 150 DEG, AT 80 KTS, 500' AGL. WITH ^CPT HARP^ CONTROLLING THE AIRCRAFT THE DESCENT WAS MADE AT 60 KTS ALTITUDE WITH ROTOR IN THE GREEN. AT 50' AGL ^CPT HARP^ INITIATED A FLARE AND AT ABOUT 15' HE SLOWLY PULLED IN MOST OF THE AVAILABLE PITCH. AS THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO FALL THROUGH ^CW2 WILSON^ ASSUMED CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND WAS ABLE TO LEVEL THE SKIDS BEFORE TOUCHDOWN. THE MANEUVER TERMINATED AT 1020 HRS WITH HARD GROUND IMPACT CAUSING THE MAIN ROTOR BLADES TO FLEX DOWNWARD AND 'SEVER' THE TAILBOOM FROM THE FUSELAGE. BOTH PILOTS ESCAPED WITHOUT DIFFICULTY AND ^CPT HARP^ SUSTAINED A MINIMAL BACK INJURY.\\
