THE AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL AFTER A CHIP DETECTOR WARNING LIGHT HAD COME ON DURING FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS EXAMINED AND LIGHT METAL FUZZ WAS FOUND ON THE ENGINE CHIP DETECTOR PLUG. THE ENGINE WAS RUN UP AFTER BEING FLUSHED. NO ENGINE CHIP DETECTOR LIGHT CAME ON SO THE AIRCRAFT WAS CLEARED FOR A ONE TIME FLIGHT TO A DIRECT SUPPORT FACILITY AT ^DA NANG, RVN^. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT A ^40 MINUTE FLIGHT^. ^CW2 MILO BURROUGHS^, A MAINTENANCE OFFICER WITH CONSIDERABLE TIME IN THIS TYPE AIRCRAFT, ELECTED TO PILOT THE MACHINE. HE TOOK ALONG ^SP/5 THOMAS A. TUCKER^ TO ACT AS CREWCHIEF. PRIOR TO FLIGHT THE AIRCRAFT SEEMED TO OPERATE NORMALLY WITH ALL INSTRUMENTS IN THE GREEN. AFTER TAKEOFF BOTH OCCUPANTS WATCHED THE INSTRUMENTS VERY CLOSELY. WITH NO WARNING THE ENGINE STARTED LOSING POWER SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF WITH THE INSTRUMENTS GIVING NO CLUE TO THE TROUBLE. THE PILOT ENTERED AUTOROTATION BUT FOUND THAT THE AREA NEAR HIM WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY COVERED WITH TREES OR DWELLING HOUSES. THE PILOT MADE AN AUTOROTATIVE TURN TO GET INTO THE ONLY CLEAR AREA BUT THIS PLACED HIM IN A DOWNWIND SITUATION. TO COMPOUND HIS DIFFICULTIES HE FOUND THAT HE HAD TO PULL A LITTLE COLLECTIVE TO CLEAR A LINE OF TREES SURROUNDING THE OPEN AREA. UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES THE PILOT PULLED HIS REMAINING AVAILABLE COLLECTIVE AND TRIED A TOUCHDOWN FROM AUTOROTATION. UNDER THE ABOVE RELATED CIRCUMSTANCES A SAFE LANDING COULDN'T BE MADE. THE HELICOPTER TOUCHED DOWN HARD AND BOUNCED, THEN ROLLED TO THE RIGHT DESTROYING THE BLADES AND DOING OTHER DAMAGE. IT IS SUSPECTED ENGINE HAD SEIZED PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN.\\
