AIRCRAFT #846 WAS ENROUTE TO A CONTACT FIRE MISSION. THIS WAS THE AIRCRAFT'S SECOND FLIGHT OF THE DAY. THE ARICRART HAD BEEN FLOWN 01+20 HOURS PRIOR TO THE MISHAP. THE AIRCRAFT HAD PERFORMED WELL DURING THE PREVIOUS FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES OUT OF QUAN LOI IN STRAIGHT AND LEVEL FLIGHT AT 100 KNOTS AND 1200 FEET. THE AIRCRAFT HAD 35 LBS. OF TORQUE, FULL LOAD OF ROCKETS PLUS 800 LBS OF FUEL. ALL INSTRUMENTS WERE WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING RANGE WHEN A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD. AFTER THE LOUD BANG THE AIRCRAFT HAD A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN AUTOROTATED INTO SMALL TREES. AUTOROTATION DID NOT TERMINATE WITH ROTOR BLADES STILL TURNING. THE BLADES STRUCK SEVERAL SMALL TREES, STOPPED AND THE AIRCRAFT FELL STRAIGHT DOWN FROM ABOUT 10-15 FEET. BOTH CREW MEMBERS SUSTAINED ACUTE MID BACK STRAIN WITH THE PILOT ALSO SUSTAINING INJURY TO HIS NECK AND THROAT.\\
War Story:
I am Gary (Dad) White, the aircraft commander on 67-15846 during this accident. One small correction to the accident report as it relates to the size of the trees. Those were the tallest 10 to 15 feet trees I have ever seen and I am sure the angel flying the UH-1 that cut his own LZ with his blades to pick me and McGill up would concur. I would say a very conservative estimate would be 50
feet. It is true the rotor blades were not turning during impact with the ground for I did just like I was coached in training and bleed the RPM as low as I could get it before the blades contacted the trees.
