Accident Summary:
THE AIRCRAFT HAD DEPARTED TAY NINH ON A VR MISSION AT APPROXIMATELY 1800 HOURS, AND WAS IN STRAIGHT AND LEVEL FLIGHT AT 2000 FEET AND APPROXIMATELY 90 KNOTS. THE FIRST INDICATION OF TROUBLE WAS AN EXTREME NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 90 DEGREES. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY AN EXTREME NOSE LOW ATTITUDE AND A LVVELING OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT WITH A SLIGHT ROLL OT THE RIGHT. DURING FIVE TO EIGHT OF THESE REPEATED CYCLES, THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD NO CYCLIC CONTROL, ONLY COLLECTIVE AND ANTI-TORQUE CONTROL. DURING THESE CYCLES THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ENGINE AND ROTOR RPM INCREASED AND WITH THE NEEDLES JOINED, WAS READING AN ESTIMATED 7700 RPM. THE PILOT TRIED TO CONTROL THE HIGH RPM BY APPLYING COLLECTIVE PITCH AND ROLLING OFF THE THROTTLE AND ROLLING FFF THE THROTTLE. THE PILOT STATED THAT WITH MAXIMUM PITCH AND WITH THE THROTTLE ROLLED OFF PAST THE FLIGHT IDLE STOP HE HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE EXTREMELY HIGH ENGINE AND ROTOR RPM. IT WAS STATED THAT THE TORQUE METER HAD REACHED A MAXIMUM OF 100 PSI WHILE TRYING TO CONTROL THE AIRCRAFT WITH COLLECTIVE. THERE WAS COMMUNICATION BETWWEN THE COBRA AND LOH TEAM DURING THE UNCONTROLLABLE DESCENT. AT APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET, THE ROTOR RPM WAS DOWN IN THE GREEN WHILE THE ENGINE RPM WAS STILL AT ITS MAXIMUM. THE PILOT TRIED TO DISENGAGE THE SCAS, BUT STATED THAT AS FAR AS HE KNEW, IT WOULD NOT DISENGAGE. THE FUEL WAS TURNED OFF PRIOR TO IMPACT BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT MAXIMUM RPM. THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO ITS LAST NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE AT 35 TO 50 FEET. THE PILOT HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE SELECTION OF THE LANDING AREA BUT CUSHIONED THE AIRCRAFT INTO A DENSE BAMBOO AREA WITH THE COLLECTIVE. THE GUNNER STATED THAT HE TURNED HIS ELECTRICAL POWER SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION AND BOTH PERSONNEL DEPARTED THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY PICKED UP BY THE LOH. THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT BURN ON IMPACT. THE TAIL BOOM DID BURN, HOWEVER, WHEN ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN BY GROUND TROOPS SENT TO THE CRASH SCENE.\\
