Accident Summary:

THE AIRCRAFT WAS ENGAGED ON A MORTAR/ROCKET PATROL MISSION AT NIGHT. WHILE PERFORMING THIS MISSION, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER WAS ASKED BY A GROUND UNIT TO CHECK OUT SOME LIGHTS OUTSIDE THE PERIMETER. HE ACCEPTED THE REQUEST AND AS HE PASSED OVER THE AREA IN QUESTION, HE ENTERED A LEFT-HAND ORBIT. AFTER SEVERAL PASSES AT ALTITUDE, HE REPORTED NEGATIVE SIGHTINGS. HE WAS AGAIN ASKED TO LOOK OVER THE AREA AND BEGAN LEFT HAND ORBITS. HE MADE THREE ORBITS AND ON THE LAST ORBIT THOUGHT HE EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION. HE NOTICED A LOSS OF RPM AND NOTICED HIS ALTITUDE WAS LOWER. HE LOWERED COLLECTIVE AND SET UP AN APPROACH TO THE PERIMETER WIRE. HE DID NOT ATTEMPT TO REPOSITION HIS SEARCHLIGHT, CONCENTRATING PRIMARILY ON LANDING THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED ON A SLIGHT SLOPE WITH ZERO AIRSPEED AND SETTLED WITH NO DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENT. THE PILOT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES, THERE WAS NO FIRE.\\
