Accident Summary:

 AIRCRAFT 310 WAS ENROUTE TO PHUOC VINH ON THE THIRD FLIGHT OF THE DAY. THE AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN FLOWN 05+00 HOURS PRIOR TO THE MISHAP. THE AIRCRAFT SHOWED NO FAULTY INDICATIONS ON THESE PREVIOUS FLIGHTS. THE AIRCRAFT HAD JUST BROKEN OUT OF QUAN LOI TRAFFIC (05) ON CROSSWIND AT 80 KNOTS AND 500 RPM RATE OF CLIMB. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOADED WITH APPROXIMATELY 900 LBS. OF FUEL. A LOUD EXPLOSION WAS HEARD IN THE REAR SECTION, ACCOMPANIED BY TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. THE AIRCRAFT WAS AUTOROTATED INTO A BAMBOO AREA WITH SOME TREES IN IT, BOARDED BY DENSE TRIPLE CANOPY JUNGLE. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER STATES THAT HE SAW THE MAIN ROTOR LEAVE THE AIRCRAFT APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET ABOVE THE BAMBOO. PITCH WAS PULLED IN AN ATTEMPT TO CUSHION THE LANDING WITH APPARENTLY NEGATIVE RESULTS. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED HARD AND BOTH CREW MEMBERS SUSTAINED COMPRESSION FRACTURES OF LUMBER VERTEBRAE. THE PILOT ALSO RECEIVED INJURIES TO HIS RIGHT ARM.\\

Additional information about this casualty:
Chuck was on his way back to his unit from a mission in Northern I Corp. He stopped at Quanq Tri to refuel and wx moved in. He should have RON'ed with us, but there was a round-eye show in Hue-Phu Bai that he just HAD to see. Three or four days later I heard that they had to dig the first 6 feet of the nose of his snake out of the ground.
