Accident Summary:
The pilot elected to try a hovering autorotation. At that moment though, the aircraft tail struck the left side of the revetment. Pilot reduced pitch and throttle as he sat the aircraft on the ground. The tail rotor and 90 degree gear box were found some ten feet from the aircraft

Accident Summary:
ON 10 DECEMBER 1971 AT 0830 HOURS, ^CW2 JIMMY THORNBURG^, AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, AND ^CPT EDUARDO YATES^, PILOT, DEPARTED MARBLE MOUNTAIN ARMY AIRFIELD IN AIRCRAFT ^66-15300^, AN AH-1G, WITH 1150 POUNDS OF FUEL AND A FULL LOAD OF ARMAMENT. THEY WERE ENROUTE TO THEIR AREA OF OPERATION IN THE VICINITY OF FIRE SUPPORT BASE ROSS. THE MISSION THAT DAY WAS TO SUPPLY GUN COVER FOR AN AIR CAV LOW LWVEL RECON TEAM. UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR ASSIGNED TASK ^CW2 THORNBURG^ AND ^CPT YATES^ BROKE STATION FOR RETURN TO MARBLE MOUNTAN ARMY AIRFIELD WITH THE INTENTION OF REFUELING. THEU WERE INDICATION 350 POUNDS OF FUEL ABOARD. ^CPT YATES^ TOOK THE CONTROLS, CLIMBED TO 1600' AND LEVELED OFF WITH ALL INSTRUMENTS IN THE GREEN, AND NO CAUTION LIGHTS. APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES LATER, ^CW2 THORNBURG^ TOOK THE CONTROLS, MADE A CROSS CHECK OF THE INSTRUEENTS, AND THEN PUT THE AIRCRAFT INTO ABOUT A TEN DEGREE DIVE WITH THE INTENTION OF LOSING SOME ALTITUDE, AS HE WAS HAVING TROUBLE MAINTAINING VISUAL CONTACT WITH HIS LEAD AIRCRAFT. GOING THROUGH 800', THE AIRCRAFT SURGED SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT MAKING A RATHER SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM POWERED FLIGHT TO AUTOROTATION. SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE MASTER CAUTION LIGHT, ENGINE FUEL PUMP LIGHT, AND AFT FUEL BOOST PUMP LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. ^CW2 THORBURG^ ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND IMMEDIATELY MADE A MAYDAY TRANSMISSION. DURING THIS TIME HE HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE FORCED LANDING AREA. HE HAD A CHOICE OF TWO AREAS, ONE BEING HIGHWAY QL 1, AND THE OTHER WHAT APPEARED TO BE A SMOOTH CLEAR FIELD. HE CHOSE THE FIELD AS APPOSED TO THE HIGHWAY. AS THERE WAS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD. WHEN ON SHORT FNNAL, HE NOTICED THAT IT WAS A VIETNAMESE GRAVE YARD WITH MANY BURIAL MOUNDS, HIS ROTOR RPM REMAINED IN THE LOW GREEN. HE HAD CONSIDERED JETTISIONING HIS ROCKET PODS, BUT THERE WERE TOO MANY CIVILIANS IN THE AREA AND HE FELT THE WING STORES MIGHT HELP TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT UPRIGHT IN IMPACT. ^CW2 THORNBURG^ ATTEMPTED A ZERO AIRSPEED/GROUND ROLL TOUCHDOWN TO PREVENT NOSE OVER OF THE AIRCRAFT IN THE UNEVEN TERRAIN. HE ALSO FELT THAT THE FLARES AT THE TERMINATION OF HIS AUTOROTATION WOULD BUILD HIS ROTOR RPM TO THE HIGH GREEN RANGE. RPM DID NOT BUILD IN HE FLARE AND THE RESULTING ZERO GROUND SPEED TOUCHDOWN WAS A HARD LANDING. THE AUTOROTATION AND LANDING TERMINATION WERE CONDUCTED WITH A RIGHT QUARTERING HEAD WIND. THE REAR OF THE SKIDS AND THE TAIL STINGER MADE SIMULATNEOUS CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT EHEN BOUNCED, THE NOSE SWUNG LEFT, THE TAIL TO THE RIGHT, AND THE ROTOR SYSTEM FLEXED DOWN AND SEVERED THE TAIL BOOM, AFT OF THE SYNCHRONIZED ELEVATOR. THE SKIDS WERE SPREAD AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST UPRIGHT. ^CW2 THORBURG^ NOTED THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATING 200 POUNDS AND COMPLETED SHUT DOWN OF THE SYSTEMS AS ^CPT EDUARDO YATES^ EXITED THE AIRCRAFT. BOTH PILOTS EXITED THE AIRCRAFT UNASSITED AND APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES LATER THE AIRCRAFT WAS SECURED BY INFANTRY PERSONNEL AND BOTH PILOTS WERE PICKED UP BY A RECOVERY HELICOPTER.\\
