ON THE MORNING OF 31 MAR 71 AT 0700 HOURS AIRCRAFT ^443^ DEPARTED THE ^116TH ASSAULT HELICOPTER COMPANY^ FOR A DIRECT FLIGHT TO QUANG NGAI. UPON ARRIVAL AT QUANG NGAI ^443^ WAS REFUELED AND DEPARTED TO PROVIDE GUN COVER FOR A COMBAT ASSAULT. AT 1000 HOURS AIRCRAFT ^443^ RETURNED TO CHU LAI TO REFUEL AND REARM. AT 1025 HOURS ^443^ DEPARTED CHU LAI TO PROVIDE GUN SUPPORT FOR ANOTHER CA IN THE AREA OF DUC PHO, REFUELED AT DUC PHO AND COVERED THE CA INTO THE AFTERNOON. AT APPROXIMATELY 1500 HOURS, ^443^ REFUELED AT DUC PHO AND DEPARTED ENROUTE TO THE NEXT LANDING ZONE, AS TRAIL AIRCRAFT, BEING VECTOERED BY THE COMMAND AND CONTROL AIRCRAFT. THE LZ WAS LOCATED IN A SLOPING VALLEY AND WHILE CLIMBING TO THE AREA FOR A RECON, THE ENGINE AND ROTOR RPM BEGAN DECREASING. AT APPROXIMATELY 6200 RPM THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND ATTEMPTED TO REGAIN RPM BY EXECUTING A SLIGHT FLARE. HE THEN ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A POWER ON APPROACH TO THE LZ. AT APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET OF ALTITUDE ^443^ EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. THE AC EXECUTED A FORCED LANDING INTO THE LZ USING ALL AVAILABLE RPM TO CUSHION THE LANDING. AIRCRAFT ^443^ LANDED IN HIGH ELEPHANT GRASS, WHICH WAS CONCEALING LARGE BOULDERS, AND BOUNCED CAUSING MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.\\
